Jesus asks his followers to be the "Salt of the earth" and the "Light of the world." What does that mean? Are we supposed to blend in with our neighbors so that we can influence them? Or should we look and act completely different?

More to the point, is this type of lifestyle optional for us as Christians? What are the consequences––for ourselves and for the world––if we fail to act?
