Market Close 2 Nov 16: Aussie shares close near 7-week lows

The Australian sharemarket fell to its weakest level in seven weeks ahead of next week's US Presidential election, which looks set to be a closer outcome than anticipated. Gold stocks rose strongly thanks to a flight to safety.
