Why Is The US So Loyal To Israel?

Israel and the US have had close relations since the creation of Israel over 70 years ago. Why are we so dedicated to our relationship with Israel, no matter what they do? Why are any dissenting voices immediately shut down in ways we don't see on any other topic? How is that relationship beginning to crack in light of recent events?
