The European Parliament is calling for better support for those who use sign language to communicate. In a vote today, the MEPs backed proposals to get official recognition of sign language used by deaf people in each EU country. The Parliament is supporting a range of proposals including better funding for sign language initiatives and training along with the introduction of legislation to ensure universal design in multimedia applications for deaf people. The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada who voted for the proposals, says deaf people need help in many different ways.
