MEPs approve rule of law mechanism

The European Parliament has adopted a new law which links access to EU cash to respecting its fundamental values.

 

The rule of law mechanism came about over concerns that countries like Hungary and Poland were backsliding on democratic values.

 

Both countries objected to the clause and threatened to block the long-term budget and COVID recovery fund, but a compromise was finally reached.
