Pre-Health Opportunities:
RUSCH - “Rural and Urban Scholars in Community Health (RUSCH) is a pre-med pipeline program designed to select and nurture students who show an interest in practicing medicine in rural and urban underserved areas of Wisconsin.”
HPSP - ”The Health Professions Shadowing Program (HPSP) is a free, two-week professional development program held every summer ( usually in late July/early August) designed to help increase access, equity, and diversity in healthcare.”
ANAMS- “The Association of Native American Medical Students (ANAMS) is a student organization representing Native American graduates, health professionals, and students throughout the U.S and Canada. Our goals include providing support and resources for all Native Americans currently enrolled in various allied health professions schools.”
GLAW- The Great Lakes Applicant Workshop is for those interested in applying for any medical school. It features mini-sessions covering the application process, MCAT overview and strategies, tips for writing a personal statement and a medical student panel, in addition to a keynote address from a Native physician.
Professional Development Opportunities:
CCMW- The Cross Cultural Medicine Workshop that features “hands on events facilitated by elders, traditional healers, knowledge bearers and Indigenous experts. This workshop aimed toward health care providers including but not limited to: physicians, medical students, hospital and clinic staff, counselors, program staff, and healthcare professionals.”
AAIP Annual Conference- “The Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP) conducts an annual national health conference to serve as a forum for healthcare professionals, medical students, policy makers, government officials and tribal/community members concerned with American Indian/Alaska Native health issues.”
Additional Opportunities:
AHEC (WI Express) - “AHEC Community Health Immersion (WI Express) Since the mid-1990s, AHEC Community Health Immersion (formerly WI Express) has given undergraduate and graduate health profession students the unique opportunity to connect with the diverse communities and cultures of Wisconsin, exploring health care delivery and public health in medically underserved areas. This well-known experience is now integrated into our AHEC Scholars program, and we invite students outside of the program to join our sessions as room allows.”
CHIP - “Community Health Internship Program (CHIP) enables college students who have an interest in community health, public health, or population health to work with local health departments, tribal health centers, community health centers and community service organizations throughout urban and rural Wisconsin for an eight-week summer internship.”
Wy’est Pathway- “Wy’est is a tuition-free post-baccalaureate health education Pathway for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) learners who are passionate about becoming physicians. We recruit nationwide and our scholars receive a monthly stipend throughout the 10-month Pathway”
