“Feasting on the Bread of Life” - John 6:47-59 – (Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/Feb. 23, 2014)

47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.  48 I am the bread of life.  49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.  50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.  51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."  52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"  53 Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.  54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.  55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.  56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.  57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.  58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever."  59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. (Jn. 6:47–59 NIV)

1. The bread that Jesus offers is heavenly and eternal, and can only be seen with spiritual eyes.

I am the bread of life. (John 6:48, NIV)

But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." (John 6:50–51, NIV)

For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." (John 6:33, NIV)

At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?" "Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. (John 6:41–44, NIV)

The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you-- they are full of the Spirit and life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them." (John 6:63–65, NIV)

2. The bread that Jesus offers is himself, which must be broken in vicarious sacrifice.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." (John 6:51, NIV)

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29, NIV)

Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. (John 6:53–54, NIV)

3. Everyone who receives the bread of Jesus’ sacrifice in faith is granted eternal life.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." (John 6:51, NIV)

Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. (John 6:53–54, NIV)

For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day." (John 6:40, NIV)

For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. (John 6:55, NIV)

4. True faith in Jesus is an abiding faith that looks to him for the only bread that can truly satisfy.

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever." (John 6:56–58, NIV)

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. (John 8:31, NIV)

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. (John 15:4, NIV)

If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. (John 15:6, NIV

 Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. (John 6:35, NIV)

Main Idea

Ø  Jesus, the bread of heaven, has been broken in sacrifice, and all who feast on him in abiding faith have eternal life and joy.
