European sharemarkets rose again on Wednesday. There was on-going optimism about US-China trade talks. There was also a focus on earnings. Reuters report that earnings for the last quarter of 2018 are now expected to rise 3% over the year, a more optimistic outlook than the 2.3% forecast made last week. European sharemarkets rose again on Wednesday. There was on-going optimism about US-China trade talks. There was also a focus on earnings. Reuters report that earnings for the last quarter of 2018 are now expected to rise 3% over the year, a more optimistic outlook than the 2.3% forecast made last week. The Spanish sharemarket was flat after parliament rejected the 2019 budget. The pan-European STOXX600 index rose by 0.6%. The German Dax index rose by 0.4% while the UK FTSE rose by 0.8%. In London trade, shares of Rio Tinto rose by 1.4% and shares of BHP rose by 2.4%.
* US sharemarkets were up by around 0.3% on Wednesday. Investors watched news on the US-China trade talks. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin described the talks as "so far, so good". The South China Morning Post also reported China’s President Xi Jinping “is scheduled to meet” key members of the US trade talks delegation, including US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, in Beijing on Friday. Shares in Activision Blizzard rose 7.8% after the videogame maker announced a share buyback plan and job cuts. With an hour of trade to go the Dow Jones index was higher by 140 points or 0.6%. The S&P500 index was up by 0.5%. And the Nasdaq index was higher by 30 points or 0.4%.
