The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy is calling for the president of the European Central Bank to step down from an elite group of bankers known as the G30. His calls follow a damning report issued this week by the European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly. She’s recommending that Mario Draghi suspend his membership of the G30 because it might compromise the ECB’s independence. The G30 is a Washington based private group of bankers, bank governors and academics. Matt Carthy says Mr Draghi’s membership of it presents a serious conflict of interest.
