Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11 to honor all military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
 It originated as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, when the armistice with Germany took effect.
 In 1954, following World War II and the Korean War, Congress renamed the holiday to Veterans Day to honor veterans of all U.S. wars, both living and deceased.
 The day is marked by ceremonies, parades, and a two-minute silence at 2:11 pm Eastern Standard Time, and it is a legal holiday with non-essential federal offices closed and federal employees paid.
