Tyler, like many Canadian boys grew up with dreams of one day playing in the National Hockey League. At age 15, Tyler was already playing AAA hockey, the highest level in able-bodied hockey for his age. However, following a leg injury in a hockey tournament, it was discovered and diagnosed that Tyler had spindle cell sarcoma. As a result, Tyler's left leg would have to be amputated to save his life. Rather than let this setback his life, Tyler began playing Sledge Hockey the next year, quickly emerging as a national star.
