In the 8th century BC, Israel was at the highest point of their popularity and influence, militarily and economically, since the days of Solomon – when suddenly, catastrophe struck. In this historical context Joel came declaring that this calamity pointed to the ultimate day of calamity – the coming Day of the Lord, bringing God's judgment on all peoples and nations that ultimately rejected Him.
