Brothers Grimm’s “Maid Maleen” Summary Pt. 2: Kitchen Work and Stand-in, and Identity Denial (Clip)

Maid Maleen and her servant travel from country to country, surviving on uncooked nettles, and finally find a castle kitchen that takes them in as maids.  MM accommodates the princess, an ugly and wicked girl who is betrothed to MM’s erstwhile love.  Wanting to avoid the opprobrium of the crowds, the princess gets MM to take her place in the ceremony.  The crowds adore the beautiful, bejeweled Maleen, as does the prince, who thinks he recognizes her, but she denies her identity.
