The Intentional Clinician: Psychology, Philosophy, and Therapy
Health & Fitness:Mental Health
Adam Nash LPC joins Paul Krauss MA LPC for a discussion on “the shadow” and how this concept specifically applies to men. Paul and Adam discuss the concepts of “the shadow”, the persona, ego, repression, projection, the Johari Window, personality theory, Shadow Work, Scapegoating, the collective cultural or political shadow, Masculinity and the Shadow, shadow possession and more.
If you are a person who is wanting to explore the reasons why you continually have similar outcomes with relationships, jobs, or projects despite the circumstances or locations changing, then Shadow Work may be for you. It is important to find a licensed professional counselor or therapist that is knowledgeable about Shadow Work before embarking on this journey. There are many coaches that advertise "shadow work" and if you work with a coach who does not have clinical training or follow a code of ethics, you are definitely more at risk of having a negative experience.
The shadow is a concept largely explored by Carl Jung, a psychoanalyst who broke off from Sigmund Freud, who theorized that hidden within us all is our “shadow” which is aspects of our self that we either keep hidden, from ourselves and others, or have never even realized that they are there.
Hidden or unconscious aspects of oneself, both good and bad, which the ego has either repressed or never recognized. -Carl Jung
Carl Jung believed that in order to become a healthy person one must learn about their own shadow otherwise they would continue to live their life with a “mask on” --concealing parts of themselves from themselves and others.
The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. -Carl Jung
