Supporting Michigan Veterinarians Through Policy, Wellness, and Engagement

In this episode of Insight, host Ariel Backus speaks with Bonnifer Ballard, CAE, CEO of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, about her transition into the role in June 2024 and the priorities shaping her leadership. Ballard reflects on what drew her to MVMA—including her passion for animals and the opportunity to lead an organization with both a PAC and foundation—and offers a glimpse into her day-to-day work, from writing and legislative meetings in Lansing to building relationships across the profession. The conversation dives into key policy issues facing veterinarians, including opposition to a “courtroom advocate” bill without veterinary involvement, proposed changes to cat declaw legislation to account for owner health considerations, and the need for clear guardrails around veterinary telehealth.
