What if you didn’t have the thing you love or the thing you take for granted? How would you feel?

Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I read this idea recently and remembered, we’ve talked about it here, in Episode 18 so I wanted to share this idea again. It’s negative visualization for gratitude. Some people call it practicing the take-away.
When you have trouble thinking about gratitude. In Episode 82 we talked about how we don’t always feel like it. You can practice the take-away approach.
When you feel like you have nothing to be grateful for, the sky is falling and you are feeling all the feels. One exercise is to start by thinking about how you’d feel if certain things that you love were taken away from you. For example, if suddenly your eyesight was taken from you, how would you feel? The science indicates that this can help you feel gratitude for having eyes that see, in this example.
I think about this with my husband. If he were gone, how would I feel? I’d feel terrible. It reminds me of all the good things I love about him and are grateful for. I’m less annoyed by the little things and feel grateful he takes out the trash and listens to me verbally process almost every thing in my mind (bless him - he’s a saint, and so patient).
I guess it just puts things in a different perspective. It’s not easy when you are feeling really crappy and you really want to go down that road of negative energy, and negative energy is so contagious that it’s easy to get people to drive down that road with you. But that’s where the work starts, when it feels hard.
I’m cheering for you.
