As a tour manager, manager, roadie and music promoter, Frank Murray has worked with some of Ireland’s biggest musical acts including Thin Lizzy, The Pogues, The Frames and Glen Hansard. This week Jarlath gets a rare insight into the life of a man who has seen the glorious highs and heartbreaking lows of working so closely with some of these legendary artists. Frank speaks about life during the early days of Thin Lizzy in an Ireland that was “dogged by conservatism” (6:00) and their subsequent move to London having exhausted Ireland’s biggest venues (14:00).
Frank explains how The Pogues changed attitudes towards the Irish in London (42:00), the integral part he played in the creation of ‘Fairytale of New York’ (53:00) and the incredible lengths he went to in his attempts to save Shane McGowan from his alcohol and drug addictions (48:00).
This conversation is certainly not short of jaw-dropping stories including when Shane McGowan did a runner before an American tour (44:00), smoking joints on aeroplanes (17:00) and negotiating vital venue requirements with farmers (22:00).
