איוון היה אזרח אוקראיני ששירת בצבא האדום. הוא נלקח בשבי ע"י צבא גרמני ושנים אחרי הואשם בפשעי מלחמה במלחמת העולם השניה.
עדים רבים זיהו אותו כ"איוון האיום", שומר נאצי וסדיסט.
בשנות ה-80 איוון הובא למשפט בישראל
