Shazam, aka Captain Marvel... but that is a different story, is a superhero hearkening back from the Golden Age of comics. Shazam used to outsell Superman comics back then. Then for some unknown reason Shazam kinda faded into obscurity.
DC Comics attempted to reboot Shazam several times to no avail. They just couldn't seem to catch that same lightning in a bottle (pun intended) they had in the beginning. There were even whispers that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson would be playing Shazam's enemy, Black Adam.
When they announced Zachary Levi would be playing the title character, I had some worries about him pulling it off. I had only seen him in Chuck, as Fandral in the Marvel movies, and most recently as Benjamin in the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel series. I was really hoping DC could build on the success of Wonder Woman and Aquaman.
All I can say is WOW! Shazam pulled a page right out of the Marvel movies book, right down to the bald villain. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the previous DC movies. They just didn't seem to resonate with the audience at large. Let's face it, the movie has to make money at the box office or the studio won't invest money into future movies of the same kind. That's just the business.
Shazam was a great movie from beginning to end. Asher Angel and Zachary Levi played their parts to perfection. I really connected with the Billy Batson character. I enjoyed following his journey from downtrodden orphan to realizing his powers and forming a family with the other foster kids. It had the right mix of action and humor. I would love to see Shazam cross-over into other DC Comics superhero movies. Maybe we will get lucky and they will make a movie based on "Kingdom Come".
Did you like Shazam as much as we did? Let us know in the comments.
