US Close 12 Jan 17: US sharemarkets turned positive late in the day

US sharemarkets turned positive late in the day. As in Europe, Donald Trump's comments on drug pricing weighed on stock prices in the healthcare and biotechnology sectors. But the energy sector rose in response to higher oil prices. At the close of trade the Dow Jones index was up by 99 points or 0.5% to 19,954 points after holding in a 140 point range. The S&P 500 index was higher by 0.3% and the Nasdaq was up 12 points or 0.2%.
