The figure of Matthew, also known as Levi, presents an immediate and compelling tension within the Gospel narratives. His identity as a tax collector in first-century Judea placed him in a role widely perceived as corrupt, exploitative, and treasonous. Yet, this same individual was called by Jesus of Nazareth to become one of His innermost disciples, an apostle.
