Ratings agency Standard & Poor's has cut the credit ratings of BHP Billiton and BHP Billiton plc from A+ to A.
US sharemarkets fell in the morning session on Monday, recovered in afternoon trade but then eased again at the close. Energy producers fell in response to another slump in oil prices with Exxon Mobil down 2%. Economic data was also generally soft, restraining investor sentiment. At the close of trade the Dow Jones was lower by 17 points or 0.1% with the S&P 500 down less than 0.1%. However the Nasdaq finished up by 6 points or 0.1%.
