Ireland South MEP, Sean Kelly, believes the EU should agree to extend Article 50 to allow British MPs adopt a workable position on Brexit.
His comments come as the President of the European Council says he would appeal to the EU 27 leaders, ahead of a summit next week, to be open to a long extension.
In a tweet, Donald Tusk says it should be considered if the UK finds it necessary to rethink its Brexit strategy.
British MPs will later vote on whether to delay Brexit, after they ruled out a no-deal outcome last night.
Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says an extension would allow time to focus minds in Britain.
