On Thursday, 14th April 2016, Ebrima Solo Sandeng (the UDP's National Organising Secretary) led a peaceful demonstration from Serekunda (Gambia) joint by several Gambian youths demanding electoral reform against Yahya Jammeh's regime. Jammeh's forces used unreasonable force to disperse the demonstrators, leading to unlawful imprisonment and several casualties. By Saturday, 16th April, it was confirmed that Ebrima Solo Sandeng died in detention. Other UDP members Fatoumata Jawara (Female Youth President), Fatou Camara, (Constituency Women’s Leader), Nokoi Njie (2nd Vice President of the Women’s Wing) and Lang Marong (Deputy Campaign Manager) were also among those arrested, and Fatoumata Jawara was reported to be suffering from severe injuries. Another female demonstrator by the name of Sabrina Mahtani was reported to be in a coma. Following this incident, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe's, leader of the main opposition party (the United Democratic Party (UDP)) gave a press conference from his home demanding the body of Ebrima Solo Sandeng and the immediate release of the prisoners.
