Christ and Culture

The Changing, Always the same nature of becoming all things to all men - I Corinthians 9:19-23

 

Seed Scattering, Modeling, Encountering, Confronting and Inviting the World to "Come and See"

Seed Scattering - Matthew 13:1-23; Mark 4:1-20; Luke 8:4-18

• Distribution is vital!
• Hearts are the target.
• Those 'granted to know the mysteries of the Kingdom" are those who will open their hears to God - John 6:59-69

Modeling - Matthew 5:16; I Peter 3:15; Matthew 28:19; Romans 8:29; Ephesians 4:8, 11-16; Colossians 1:28-19; II Corinthians 3:18; John 13-17

• Discipleship / Christlikeness shows what Jesus is up to in his disciple making enterprise
• Distinctive Behavior, that is to say distinctive in the way of truth, John 17:17; Colossians 3:17 (with regard to the implications associated with "in the name of the Lord").
• Love and Unity as is only possible with godly like-mindedness.

Encountering - John 14:27; 15:18-25; 16:33; 17:13-21

• As with Jesus, so his followers, there is hostility out there!
• A manner of life, a disciple's character, is counter to the world (nevertheless, John 3:16-17).
• Strength and witness (yes, there are witnesses other than eye witnesses) found in the disciple's unity.

Confronting - Ephesians 5:1-14 (esp. vv. 11-13); John 3:19-21; Matthew 5:13-16

• Light, by its nature, confronts darkness - John 3:19-21
• The content of a life lived in love cannot be hidden. - Matthew 5:13-16
• Abstaining from wrong is not enough - Matthew 12:43-45 (as it related to an idol free yet inwardly empty Israel)

Inviting the World to com and see - John 1:43-46; Acts 1:1

• The world misunderstands
• It is our privilege to both show and tell the world about the real Jesus.
• It is, must be, and never anything but, putting Jesus on centerstage, in the spotlight, and in the headlines of the Gospel news - II Corinthians 1:18-22
