Mark Reeder first came to Berlin in 1978 as Factory Records' (Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays) German ambassador. In the 80's he smuggled the cassettes of punk bands from the West into East Berlin consequently creating, somewhat modestly might say, a scene. He then smuggled bands themselves, such as Die Toten Hosen and Die Ärtzte into the East to give this scene and extra 'oomph' of awareness and success.
He was able to get his friends, Joy Division, their only ever gig in Berlin, toured, and still does tour, with New Order, formed his own band Die Unbekannten, was a sound engineer for several other infamous bands, and, from 1990 - 2008, formed the ever successful music label MFS. Masterminded For Success are responsible for the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Harald Blüchel, Johnny Klimik and Ellen Alien. He then reactivated the label in 2018 to release the band STOLEN.
One of his latest ventures was B-Movie: Lust and Sound in Berlin. A documentary viewed from the perspective of Reeder himself about the music scene in Berlin between '79-'89.
Mark still lives in Berlin, Kreuzberg staying true to his Berliner routes. He continues to produce and remix trance & techno, tours the world with B-Movie, manages his label MFS, and, on a rainy, dark and cloudy day in Berlin, was kind enough to share his life story over a cup of tea, with me, The Wandering Barman.
