Two things should never be spoken of in polite company: politics and religion- and we’ve made church a polite place. So the American church, by and large, avoids the conversation, allowing political parties, special interest groups, and the media to determine how we think and why. We claim to be apolitical, but we are undeniably anything but.
Many of us are incredibly political, assuming our positions to be God’s own. But until the church provides space for honest self-reflection, biblical teaching on not just positions, but engagement, we will continue to see the polarizing partisanship that has come to define American politics.
What if there was a better way? What if the Kingdom of God could be honored by not just who we vote for, but why we vote, and how we vote? What if political engagement wasn’t an all-or-nothing proposition? What if Jesus didn’t leave room for partisanship? What if we could only serve one master? What if God called his church not to choose the lesser of two evils? What if our highest allegiance was not to America, but was to Christ?
Your candidate will win or lose based on how America votes in November.
The Kingdom of God wins or loses based on the values, attitudes, and behavior of the church before, during, and after the election season.
So let’s debunk the myth that Jesus should stay in his own lane, and allow the Scriptures to guide us, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Let’s talk about the Dirty Duo, even if it’s impolite to do so. The world doesn’t need a “polite” church. It needs a radical church.
