Mary was taking full advantage of Jesus being in her home to be in His presence, to hear His voice, and listen to His teaching. Martha apparently also had a desire to be in Jesus’ presence, after all she is the one who invited him into her home. However, she gets so busy with what she thinks needs to be done, that she misses this wonderful opportunity to spend time with Jesus, Jesus graciously let’s Martha know that her problem is not Mary’s failure to help, but it was Martha’s own lack of focus on the one thing necessary.

What is necessary? What is it that one thing we must do? Let us learn from Jesus about the one thing he deems necessary in our lives.
