Liability for damages caused by one’s items that were negligently left in a public area

You left a nail sticking out of your yard fence which caused someone’s suit to tear. You spilled oil on the floor and did not clean it up and somebody slipped in it and hurt themselves or soiled their clothing. Are you liable to pay?
