Cool Hand Luke

This week we review the 1967 American prison drama film directed by Stuart Rosenberg, starring Paul Newman and featuring George Kennedy in an Oscar-winning performance.

Newman stars in the title role as Luke, a prisoner in a Florida prison camp who refuses to submit to the system.

Set in the early 1950s, it is based on Donn Pearce's 1965 novel Cool Hand Luke.

The Scotsman is feeling a bit flat at the start as he received a big telling off from his friends a few days earlier - and he talks it through with his weekly counsellor, the Aussie.

Both enjoyed this film and the performances of Newman and Kennedy.

This was one of the first anti-establishment type movies - where the protagonist refuses to stay down.

We compare to other movies we have reviewed in the past. Older movies have a grittier feel. No special effects, no safety co-ordination, no CGI - and it makes a difference.
