Morning Report 3 Aug 21: US sharemarkets were mixed on Monday

Worries about the Covid-19 delta variant and a slowing US economy overshadowed optimism around more fiscal stimulus. US senators introduced a bipartisan infrastructure bill over the weekend. The bill includes US$550 billion in new spending over five years.Shares of payments firm Square jumped 10.2% after it said it would purchase Australian buy-now, pay-later company Afterpay for US$29 billion. But credit card and payment technology rivals Visa (-2.7%) and Global Payments (-11.2%) shares both fell. The Dow Jones index shed 97 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.2%. But the Nasdaq index rose by 8 points or 0.1%.
