A man named Battalia pulls his car into a service station named Walt's Summit Service, about 32 miles south of Victorville, California. He stops his car near the gas pumps, and honks his horn. Walt Parsons, owner, says "I'm sorry, sir. I didn't hear you drive in. You can't hear much of anything when the wind starts blowing". Battalia says "Fill her up. You better check the oil and water, too. You got any hot coffee inside?" Walt says "Yeah, hot and black". Battalia says "That's for me. Must be close to zero". Walt says "It's not that bad, It's down to around 20 degrees, but it will drop tonight though. Radio says we might get a blizzard". Battalia says "And they call this sunny California". Walt says "Well, we're more than 5,000 feet here. It's 6,500 feet at the top of the pass, up the road a piece". Battalia says "Yeah, I know. I just came over it". Walt asks "You heading north?" Battalia says "Yeah, Vegas. How far is it from here?" Walt says "It's 260 miles from Victorville, and Victorville is 32 miles from here. What's the matter? Are you lost?" Battalia asks "What makes you think so?" Walt says US Highway 66 is a direct route. Not many cars come across Red Mountain in the winter". Battalia asks "Say, ain't I seen you someplace before?" Walt says "No, not unless you've been through here before". Battalia says "Ain't never. You come from back east?" Walt says "Never been. I come from up north, Yreka". Battalia says "Funny. If you'd take that mustache off, you'd be a ringer for a kid I once knew back in Jersey City named Joey Perino. Funny. Yeah, look-alikes. You run into them sometime". Walt says "Sure". Battalia says "Without that mustache, I'd swear you would be..." Walt says "Mistaken". Battalia says "Yeah. Well, um, where do I find the coffee?" Walt says "Right inside. Sally will take care of you".
