I was thinking the other day about times I’ve sought comfort from other people when I’ve felt sad, lonely, unhappy, or even depressed and I see that certain words can make me feel comforted.
And the words I’m thinking of are not the typical Toxically Positive, “You’re going to be fine,” or “It’ll all work out for the best,” or even “God has his plan, so don’t worry.”
No. In fact, such untethered optimism has been shown to make people feel worse.
