Nearly ninety thousand women are killed every year worldwide because they are female. More than fifty thousand are killed by an intimate partner or family member. And the rise of online gender-based violence is worsening the situation.
That’s according to Dublin MEP Frances Fitzgerald who was speaking in the European Parliament last night. She told MEPs gender-based cyber violence is becoming an “increasingly pervasive and common form of violence against women”.
MEPs are today voting on proposals to introduce new measures to tackle cyber violence against women and LGBTI people.
