The Babadook (2014) and the Baba-Birth of the Modern Prestige Horror Movement

The Babadook is a 2014 Australian psychological horror film written and directed by Jennifer Kent, expanding on her 2005 short Monster in her feature debut. Starring Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman, it follows a widowed mother and her increasingly unhinged son as they confront a mysterious, top-hatted entity that may—or may not—be grief in a trench coat. The haunting score is by Jed Kurzel.
