WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 22, 2025
- Talk about frost/freeze potential in southern Brazil mid- to late-week next week is likely overdone
- Some soft frost is possible, but no crop damaging cold is likely that would threaten any crop
- Most harvesting of rice, soybeans and first season corn is done in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina where it would likely be coldest
- Wheat planting is just beginning in Rio Grande do Sul
- Safrinha corn is produced farther to the north of where the cold air is expected and temperatures will be non-threatening and the same is true for wheat, sugarcane, coffee and citrus
- Some rain may precede next week’s cooler air in Brazil’s center west and center south crop areas
- Most likely the precipitation advertised in the weather models is overdone because the cold is overdone, but there is potential for 0.20 to 0.75 inch of moisture in some of the late planted Safrinha corn and cotton production areas and if that occurs it will be timely during the reproductive phase of crop development possibly helping to bolster crop yields rather than hurting it
- China’s dryness will be partially eased by scattered showers overnight and today, although the relief will be limited
- Temperatures were hot one more day Wednesday
- Follow up moisture should be minimal for at least a week to ten days after showers end today
- Early June will be the next time most favored for some rain
- Northern Europe rainfall is still expected to begin sporadically this weekend and more favorably next week; however, parts of central Germany may get cheated out of some of the best rainfall
- Portions of France may also miss out on some of the moisture
- Areas that miss the rain will need to be closely monitored for the next period of warm and dry biased conditions
- Australia’s forecast has not changed greatly with some showers to continue today and Friday in New South Wales while other areas are dry biased for much of the coming week
- Some showers will impact coastal areas, but it will be early June before Western and South Australia crop areas get a good chance for meaningful rain
- S. weather was cold enough for frost and light freezes overnight in southwestern North Dakota and the northern half of Minnesota
- The impact on crops was minimal
- Flooding rain expected to return in the U.S. Delta, parts of Oklahoma, southeastern Kansas, southern Missouri and a part of the Tennessee River Basin over the coming week will further set back fieldwork for some areas that have not been able to plant this year
- Wheat in Oklahoma will not welcome the moisture while that in Kansas and Nebraska will prove to be beneficial
- Drying in Canada’s Prairies and a new warming trend in the coming week will exacerbate dryness in the soil over western and northern Saskatchewan and in a few areas in eastern Alberta
- Dryness remains a concern in the Peace River region of Alberta and British Columbia as well
