135 - Fishy Feminist: Talking Feminism and Fisheries with Dr. Christine Knott

What does feminism have to do with fisheries? Our guest Dr. Christine Knott uses feminism as a lens to look through inequities in our society that are reflected in the way we relate to each other, to nature and also to fisheries resources. Feminist theories gives us a conceptual tool to better understand these social and environmental inequities in the context of fisheries and aquaculture and move towards equity, inclusion and justice in coastal communities. It helps us understand why some people have access to more power and privilege over other humans and other animals in specific places and time periods, and how these inequities are linked. 

Christine grew up in a fishing family and went on to McGill University for a double major in Women’s Studies and Anthropology, and to Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador in St John's, Canada where she earned a Master's in Women's Studies and a PhD in Sociology. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow with Ocean Frontier Institute's Future Ocean and Coastal Infrastructures research project, in the Department of Sociology at Memorial University where she is part of a research group on Inclusion, Social Justice & Equity in Urban and Rural Coastal Communities. She has recently launched the Fishy Feminist website and will soon be releasing a new podcast series!
