The European Parliament today voted for proposals to increase spending on EU defence and security measures and to create a “common Union defence policy”. A majority of MEPs backed a resolution that calls for the EU to tackle the deteriorating security situation in and around Europe. MEPs have proposed a range of defence initiatives including the establishment of multinational forces and an EU headquarters to plan and command crisis management operations. They also want the EU to act where NATO is unwilling to do so. The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan, who is against the proposals, says they fit with the agenda of the President of the EU Commission Jean-Claude Juncker who has called for a common European army.
