US Close 21 Feb 17: US closed, Europe slightly higher in cautious trading

US financial markets were closed for Presidents Day holiday on Monday.

 

* European shares were generally firmer on Monday, underpinned by gains in telecoms and mining stocks. But shares in Unilever fell by 6.9% after the weekend decision by Kraft Heinz not to proceed with the takeover deal for the consumer goods company. The Euro STOXX 600 index was up by 0.2% with the German Dax  up by 0.6% while the UK FTSE was flat. In London trade shares in Rio Tinto rose by 1.3% while shares in BHP Billiton were up by 0.4%.
