EU can’t side with ‘petty dictatorship’ in Turkey – Hayes

The strained relations between Turkey and the EU have worsened following the European Parliament’s vote yesterday to temporarily freeze talks on EU membership for Turkey. The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is warning he’ll let hundreds of thousands of migrants travel on to Europe if he’s pushed too far by the EU. MEPs have been highly critical of Mr Erdogan’s repressive measures following last July’s coup in Turkey. The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says there’s an enormous gulf between Turkey and the EU when it comes to understanding liberal democratic values.
