The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy said he is not proud of Ireland’s reputation as an enabler of tax avoidance. In a speech to the European Parliament this week Mr Carthy strongly criticised the Irish government for facilitating tax avoidance for large corporations. The European Parliament today voted in favour of EU Commission proposals to crack down on corporate tax avoidance. The anti-tax avoidance directive reflects the plans by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) to limit tax base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS) and follows previous recommendations made by the European Parliament last year.
