The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy has sharply condemned the new meat quota which the EU is reported to have offered the Mercosur countries in the latest round of trade negotiations. According to reports, the quantity of meat that Mercosur would have the right to export into the EU has been increased to ninety nine thousand (99,000) tonnes per year. The EU had previously been warned that the quota shouldn’t exceed seventy thousand (70,000). Matt Carthy says that farmers and beef producers are being sacrified in a bid to seal a deal between the EU and the Mercosur states of Brazil, Uruquay, Paraquay and Argentina.
