US Close 3 Jan 17: We are expecting the ASX 200 to kick off the year in positive territory. 

 

European shares rose on Monday in response to strong readings on manufacturing. The IHS Markit purchasing managers index for manufacturing rose from 53.7 to 54.9 in December - the highest since April 2011. The Euro STOXX 50 index rose by 0.6% with Germany up 1.0% to a 17-month high, France up 0.4% and Italy up 1.7%.

 

US sharemarkets fell again on Friday, dragged down by tech stocks. Investors continued to book profits in quiet trade. At the close of trade on Friday, the Dow Jones index was weaker by 57 points or 0.3% with the S&P 500 index lower by 0.5%
