The Peril of Playing Church | Genesis 4:1-16

On Sunday, 14 April Pastor Craig Baxter returned to the series 'Genesis: God's Unveiling Plan of Redemption and Blessing' with 'The Peril of Playing Church' from Genesis 4:1-16.

In spite of God’s warning against sin, Cain, a tiller of the ground, murdered his brother, Abel, a shepherd of the sheep, because his brother’s offering was accepted and his was not. When confronted Cain denied responsibility for the crime and protested the severity of the punishment, prompting God to provide protection for him. Cain is an example of a worshipper who lacks faith and sincerity and acts as a warning to all who believe they can play church and expect to get away with it. In this study we learn that unbelief within leads to devastating consequences without if left unchecked.

1. Outward pretence of true worship (vv. 1-5a)
2. Anger toward those more faithful (v. 5b)
3. Ambivalence toward God’s warnings (vv. 6-8)
4. Rejection of a responsibility for sin (vv. 9-10)
5. Complaint over God’s judgement (vv. 10-16)
