US Close 14 Jan 19: Stocks flat ahead of earnings

The US sharemarket finished flat on Friday ahead of a number of quarterly profit results this week. A number of major companies cut profit expectations in recent months which will make the earnings out in coming days interesting. The all-important UK Brexit vote takes place in coming days while the US government shutdown is now the longest in modern history.
