I Don’t See the Difference Between a Kegger and a Protest

"In this episode, I examine the complex interplay between the right to protest and the right to public order. I begin by discussing the legal tensions surrounding protests, particularly highlighting a recent incident where law enforcement intervened to shut down scores of college and university protests. I argue that using the occupation of property as leverage for demands amounts to blackmail, not legitimate protest, and should be condemned. This conversation segues into a discussion on the violence and looting that characterized some Black Lives Matter protestors and how people make excuses for protestors who break laws when they agree with the protestors. This transitions into a discussion of the CHOP (Capitol Hill Organized Protest) zone, illustrating how the absence of law enforcement can lead to anarchic outcomes. I express my extreme anger at the mayor of Seattle for allowing the CHOP at all. We conclude by examining the broader implications of Western governmental and societal norms and how these amount to a bubble that is the Western world, and how acting from that bubble makes us ham-handed because we wrongly assume our values are universal.
