Reuters reported that shale oil producer Pioneer Natural Resources lifted 5.8% following a report that Exxon Mobil Corp held preliminary talks with the company about a potential acquisition. Chip stocks such as Micron Technology (shares +8%) rose on plans by Samsung to cut chip production. The Dow Jones index rose by 101 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index rose 0.1%. But the Nasdaq index fell by around 4 points or less than 0.1%.
