Only a game? Don’t think so!

In the days before television, sports truly was a vehicle for bringing people together in a community. But it was also a venue for corruption and vice. A century ago, church leaders spoke out against professional sports with a degree of over-reaction. Are we as a church even thinking about our view of sports? The Bible does refer to sports. One example is Philippians 3:12-16, which compares life to a race. But there are other texts that also relate. Luke 4:1-13 tells of the temptations of Christ in the wilderness. In many ways sports has become a huge temptation in our culture. As a dominant "religion", and we are tempted to worship at the alter of sports. The question for us as Christians might be, "Where do we draw our limits in our love of sports?"
