The recent liquidation of one of America’s most wanted enemies in the deserts of Yemen is a welcome, tactical victory in what I call, the War for the Free World. Anwar al-Awlaki was a particularly dangerous foe because he was an articulate, English-speaking American citizen with a demonstrated ability to use the internet to reach and inspire a worldwide audience. We can only hope that his death will make it harder for his organization, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, to kill more of our countrymen. Gratifying as such assassinations are, however, they do not mean we are defeating al Qaeda, let alone winning the War for the Free World.
