We have manatees here in Florida too and when you see them, you think – there is no way a sailor could possibly mistake a manatee for a mermaid.
Because manatees are basically giant grey see cows.
They aren’t the slightest bit attractive or curvy or human-ish.
My point is that if you are going to be skeptical and look for an alternate rational explanation for something, and you should, it needs to be plausible.
Horny sailors mistaking manatees for mermaids, isn’t plausible.
Just saying.
